Our History

Incorporated as the Village of Bobcaygeon in 1876, and known as the “Hub of the Kawarthas”, Bobcaygeon has become a tourist and retirement destination for those looking to escape the GTA. The recorded name bob-ca-je-wan-unk comes either from the Mississauga Ojibwa word baabaagwaajiwanaang ”at the very shallow currents”, giishkaabikojiwanaang ”at the cliffed cascades” or obaabikojiwanaang ”at currented rocky narrows”, or from the French beau bocage ”beautiful hedged farmland”. Bobcaygeon has historically been a popular destination for tourists and cottagers, the first lock constructed (Lock 32) on the Trent Severn Waterway is the centre of the village which connects boaters with Sturgeon Lake and Pigeon Lake.

Three Islands one Heart

Bobcaygeon rests on three islands in-between Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes, and is connected by seven bridges. The Kawartha Lakes and Trent Severn Waterway are a focal point of recreational activities in Bobcaygeon. From sailing, fishing, swimming and canoeing to cruising the Trent Severn Waterway.
